I decided I want to get a motorcycle. I’m planning on signing up for a headstart riding course at a local school so I can get some experience on a bike, then taking another riding class, then getting my permit and a bike. Pretty much decided on a Ninja 300. I’m so excited!!!
Any northern VA oppos out there that ride?

Nice, I'm over in Centreville/Fairfax. Did you do any riding courses around here?

I did the one through NOVA. It was fun! I was worried it would be all classroom stuff with only a few moments on a bike, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong.

Pretty much the exact same thing a buddy of mine just did a few weeks ago, beginner class and Ninja 300. Or was it an R3? Crap, I don’t remember. But it seems to be an excellent size for a starter.

Go to the NOVA one, the ones H-D dealerships have are expensive as shit

Good choice. Take the MSF course, get some practice, get a good bike, and enjoy the wonderful world of 2 wheels.

Sounds good, I'll look into it. Can't seem to find much current info on them though.

I'm not too interested in learning on a Harley anyways, seem to have lots of other great options around me too.

Nice, only difference is I have no experience on a motorbike at all.

How's it been going for him so far?

It’ll be fun, I promise!
I’m in Missouri though, a bit too far away for a ride.

Well unless you take your own bike, you will most likely be learning on a cruiser style of some sort. The NOVA Loudon class only has standards and cruisers and from what I hear that is typical of MSF classes nation wide.

He’s never ridden before. But he says he loves it and wants to ride every chance he gets. He did tell me he had a couple scares so far, but didn’t really go into detail.

Here’s the one I did. At the time I was living in Sterling, so the campus was literally 3 minutes from my house. Really great instructors too.

I bought a Ninja 250 new as my first bike back in 2007. It’s the older model so they are a bit different, but they are really good to start on. They have enough power to hit triple digits and are able to cruise comfortably. I’ve since moved up to an SV650 but I kept my Ninja as a backup bike that I could let friends ride. It’s still just as fun in the twisties as my bigger bike.

Damn both seem to be full. I’m gonna read up on some reviews of other local schools around here.
Should I do the jumpstart course then a basic riding course or just skip to the basic riding course?

Did it take him long to get comfortable riding on the street?

Definitely would be a long ride!
I’m thinking I'll probably use the bike for lots of small trips around my area.

They do! Would be perfect if I got one in the color combo above.

I’ve got about 15k miles on it. Had the valves checked once and didn’t need adjusted. I’ve taken it on several 1000 mile trips were it sat all day at 9-11k rpm and it didn’t skip a beat.

Awesome, making me more set on a Ninja. Part of me wants to jump up and get an R6 or CBR... But that's not happening haha.

There were some people in my basic riding course that have never been on a bike before. I think you’d be fine to go straight to the basic rider course.
